With origins in mythology and astrology, the term “Dog Days of Summer” came to mean the 20 days before and 20 days after the alignment of Sirius with the Sun. During this time – July 3 to August 11 – Sirius, aka the Dog Star, is the sky’s brightest star; visible from any part of Earth. Through this stretch, Sirius rises prior to daybreak and leads a path for the sun to follow. It sits within the constellation, Canis Major, which is known as the Greater Dog, and why the moniker, Dog Star, exists.

It’s this time of year that serves as a quasi-check and balance. If things are active – personally, professionally, or both – then it’s an opportune time to reflect and assess, to pivot or redirect. It’s an opportune time because minor adjustments at the right time can lead to big rewards. If the job is going well, it’s a good time to validate. If things aren’t going well, a re-commitment may be in order. An adjustment in goals and how time is allotted each day are remedies that can be easily embraced.
